Mark has been busy building one of three prototype SGS 1-23H models at quarter scale and has taken on the task of designing a scale operating tow release hook for the nose of his model. His all-aluminum frame, release lever and hook uses 2-56 bolts to keep the two side plates together in alingment and provide the pivot points for the two moving parts. After testing the design which is very much like the original full size prototype, Mark says that release is positive under pressure in low through high angle of attack attitudes which is just what we would like to hear.
I will be looking for a supplier that can die stamp the necessary parts to kit the assembly for final construction and mounting by modelers in five scales: 1:5, 1:4, 1:3.5, 1:3 and 1:2.5, beginning with quarter scale until it is thoroughly tested. Production versions would mount by laminating over the center keel, cutting a clearance notch for the hook and lever pivots, and drilling through the side plates for bolting the assembly into position. The nose triplers which allow mounting surfaces for the balsa sheeting will then have to be routed out on their inner faces to allow clearance only for the hook pivot point.
Nice work Mark!
