Howard (Chip) Burr Jr. sent me a copy of his dad's memoir My Heart Soars which arrived in today's mail. Its absolutely wonderful and I can barely put it down without reading it through all of its short 72 pages.
Although self-published without the aid of an editor, its stories of early gliding from 1929 forward through the 50's, fondly told memories of associations and friendships with the early pioneers including Paul and Ernie Schweizer is priceless. I would say that this book brings out what it was like to live and fly and work in aviation in the early days, providing insights into the personalities, daily lives and soaring adventures of all of the greats like none other that I have read.
It is accompanied with many black and white photos of the many sailplanes described throughout the book, including three-view of the SGS 1-24 Brigadoon (on the cover) developed by Ernie and several images of the single copy built from Schweizer parts by Howard himself and successfully flown to several personal records.
A must read for any vintage soaring enthusiast and historian. Thanks Howard and for inscribing my copy.
