I only recently did a search of the Internet on Tom Knauff and was surprised at his remarkable achievements in a sailplane. It all began when Mike posted the clip of the 1-23 flown in the Thomas Crowne Affair that I learned that Tom was the pilot for the movie sequence and then after a little digging found this link... Wow! http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Thomas_L._Knauff
A short quote from the wikipedia, "His 1,647 km (1,023 mi) out-and-return flight in 1983 was the world's longest glider flight at the time, stood as a world record for nearly 20 years, and is still a U.S. national record. He has set more than 50 other U.S. National soaring records."
Tom obviously has the "Right Stuff"!
